Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i has issued a heartfelt congratulatory message to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party celebrates its 20th anniversary. The milestone event is taking place at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, running from Friday through Sunday, and brings together supporters, leaders, and allies to honour two decades of political struggle, reform and public service.
In his statement, Matiang’i applauded ODM for its unwavering contribution to the growth of Kenya’s multiparty democracy, describing political parties as essential institutions for good governance.
“On behalf of my colleagues in the Jubilee Party, I congratulate the ODM Party on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. I do this as a believer in institutions as instruments for managing public affairs in any civilised society,” he noted.
Matiang’i commended the party’s role in providing crucial oversight in governance, asserting that ODM has shaped Kenya’s political culture through consistent advocacy, vibrant opposition and issue-based politics.
The commemoration comes just weeks after the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga, the party’s long-time leader and a towering figure in Kenya’s democracy. Raila, celebrated as a champion of civil liberties and multiparty reforms, succumbed to cardiac arrest on October 15 while receiving treatment in India.
ODM’s governing council has since approved Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as Raila’s successor, pending ratification by the National Delegates Convention.
Matiang’i urged the incoming leadership to safeguard the values that defined Raila’s political life.
“Raila was the leading light of the party and remains its greatest achiever. My prayer is that the new leadership continues to be inspired by the fundamental principles and values associated with Baba Raila Amolo Odinga,” he said.
He also drew parallels with Africa’s political history, referencing how South Africa’s ANC and Tanzania’s CCM navigated transitions after the passing of icons like Nelson Mandela and Julius Nyerere.
The three-day celebration includes reflections on ODM’s journey, its governance impact and tributes to the late Raila. Matiang’i’s message not only honours ODM but also signals his statesmanlike posture as he eyes the 2027 presidential race.
