Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is intensifying his grassroots mobilization as he gears up for the 2027 presidential elections. On Friday, he held a strategic meeting with a group of Maasai leaders from Narok County. This meeting, which was hosted by prominent Maasai politician Moitalel Ole Kenta, brought together key local elders and leaders from the region, marking a significant step in Matiang’i’s efforts to solidify support across Kenya.
Matiang’i, accompanied by Kisii and Nyamira senators Richard Onyonka and Okong’o Omogeni, as well as former senator and Kisii elder Professor Sam Ongeri, emphasized the importance of community engagement in his presidential aspirations. Senator Onyonka, who participated in the discussions, stated that the consultations with Maasai leaders were part of an ongoing initiative to build relationships and gather input from various communities throughout the country.
This meeting comes just days after President William Ruto completed a tour of Narok, underlining the political significance of the region, which is known for its large voter base. The Maasai community is considered a crucial demographic, and Matiang’i’s outreach is seen as a direct appeal to secure their backing in the upcoming elections.
Matiang’i had previously declared his presidential ambition at a homecoming rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025. His commitment to restoring public trust in governance was a key theme during his speech at a major political gathering in Wamunyoro, Nyeri, where he joined opposition leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua. Matiang’i vowed to overhaul the government, emphasizing his dedication to reform and accountability.
Notably, his tenure as Education CS under President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he took significant steps to eliminate national exam cheating, continues to serve as a cornerstone of his political identity. As he plans an extensive tour of Maa-speaking counties in the coming days, Matiang’i aims to further build momentum for his 2027 presidential campaign, positioning himself as a leader committed to integrity and reform.
