Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has hinted at a possible presidential bid in 2027, telling residents of the Gusii region that he will announce his political direction at the appropriate time. Speaking during a tour of major towns along the Kisii-Sotik Road, Matiang’i said he is currently consulting widely and listening to the people before making a final decision.
Addressing enthusiastic crowds in Nyansiongo, Keroka, and Kisii, Matiang’i thanked his supporters for giving him the green light to engage with national leaders. “When the right time comes, I will come back here and tell you what’s next,” he said, receiving resounding applause from thousands of supporters.
This marked his first public tour of the Gusii region since returning from the United States, sparking speculation of a looming presidential run. While he stopped short of a formal declaration, Matiang’i’s remarks and growing support from local leaders signal his potential entry into the 2027 race.
MPs from both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja parties rallied behind him during the tour, emphasizing the need for Gusii unity. North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko (UDA) described Matiang’i as the only leader capable of uniting the community, while Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo (ODM) urged residents to prepare for the 2027 election by registering as voters.
Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka echoed similar sentiments, calling on the Gusii people to rally behind Matiang’i. “We must now be ready because we have our presidential candidate,” Kibagendi declared to a cheering crowd.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo said the community had granted Matiang’i authority to consult widely and prepare for 2027, reinforcing the momentum behind his possible candidacy.
The tour, which included stops in Kijauri, Keroka, Keumbu Market, and the Kisii Capital Roundabout, drew thousands of residents and demonstrated Matiang’i’s enduring popularity. With both grassroots backing and cross-party endorsements, his next political move is being closely watched as the 2027 landscape begins to take shape.
