Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has firmly stated that he has always operated within the confines of the law, even during his powerful tenure in government.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV’s Sam Gituku, the former minister, known for his tough and no-nonsense leadership style, said he has never seen himself as being above legal scrutiny. “I always subject myself to the law. Even when I was a minister, I was not above the law,” Matiang’i reiterated.
Addressing speculation over past conduct during his time in government, Matiang’i dismissed any claims of wrongdoing, emphasizing that legal avenues are available for anyone who believes he acted unlawfully. “If you believe I’ve done something wrong, go to the DCI or any investigative agency and give them the information. I’ve never been above the law,” he said.
The former CS, who served in key dockets including Education, ICT, and Interior under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, gained a reputation for a results-oriented approach and strong work ethic. His tenure, though marked by praise from allies, also attracted criticism from some quarters over his assertive style of governance.
In the interview, Matiang’i was also pressed about his personal wealth. He declined to disclose details, citing his current status as a private citizen. “I’m not a public official, and even if I disclosed my wealth, that is not for public consumption,” he stated.
However, he acknowledged that transparency would be necessary if he decided to re-enter public service. “I understand that once I declare my candidature, these questions will be relevant. And I’ll be ready to answer them,” he added.
Since exiting office in 2022, Matiang’i has maintained a relatively low public profile. His recent media appearance has reignited speculation about a possible political comeback ahead of the 2027 general elections. While he did not confirm any ambitions, his readiness to face scrutiny hints at a potential return to the political arena.
