Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has declared his presidential ambition for the 2027 General Election, emphasizing that his move is not driven by personal vendettas or political rivalries, but by a desire to rescue Kenya from its current socio-economic turmoil.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with K24 on Monday, Matiang’i said he is entering the race with a clear vision to restore Kenya’s stature as an economic powerhouse. “If this country wants seriousness and delivery of services, I am one of the candidates they should look at very carefully,” he said. “I have no scores to settle with anyone… I have no political debts… I am here for only one purpose – making the contribution to fix the challenges that face my country and to go forward.”
The former CS, who served during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, expressed confidence in the country’s resilience, citing Kenya’s youthful and educated population as a strong foundation for transformation. “Countries go through situations like we are going through right now. The worst thing that can happen is for us to lose hope,” he remarked. “We are a resilient nation. Kenya has great capacity, and we will rise again.”
Addressing speculation about internal wrangles within the opposition coalition, Matiang’i dismissed the claims, saying discussions were ongoing and constructive. He revealed that he would soon announce the political party under which he will run for president.
Matiang’i has been engaging with seasoned political figures including Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (Democracy for Citizens Party), Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Public Service CS Justin Muturi. Together, they are strategizing to form a unified front that could present a formidable challenge to President William Ruto in 2027.
Their coalition promises a calculated, inclusive approach aimed at addressing economic challenges, restoring public confidence in governance, and ensuring equitable development across all regions.
As 2027 approaches, Matiang’i’s message of hope and reform appears to be gaining traction among Kenyans disillusioned by the current leadership and searching for a credible alternative.
