Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i is set to make a major political comeback this Saturday as he joins a high-profile opposition tour of Meru County. Matiang’i, who recently resigned from the World Bank and returned to Kenya on June 18, will appear alongside key opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, in what is being described as a significant offensive against the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration.
The visit marks the beginning of an aggressive series of opposition tours across the Mount Kenya region, with Meru County selected as the launchpad for this strategic realignment. According to an itinerary seen by The Star, the leaders will make stops in Kangeta, Laare, Njilu, Kiengu, Maua, and Mutuati—areas considered politically pivotal in the vote-rich Meru County.
Prominent Meru political figures expected to lead the charge include former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, former Governor Peter Munya, and former Igembe North MP Maoka Maore. Maore, speaking on Friday, emphasized the significance of the joint appearance, calling it “the first-ever united opposition tour in Mount Kenya East.”
“Our leaders will be with us to listen to the ground and interact with our people,” Maore said. “This is a clear signal that Meru is ready for a new political conversation—one that prioritizes unity and progress.”
The opposition aims to demonstrate growing dissatisfaction in Mount Kenya East with President William Ruto’s administration, which heavily relied on Meru votes in the 2022 general election. Matiang’i’s return and involvement adds gravitas to the campaign, as he is a respected figure from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s era and enjoys backing from the Jubilee Party.
This tour also forms part of a broader opposition strategy to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The leaders have pledged to unite behind one candidate to challenge Ruto, signaling a possible coalition that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape in the coming years.
