Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is accelerating efforts to consolidate national support ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. On Wednesday, Matiang’i held a strategic meeting with Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba and former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, signaling growing momentum toward opposition unity.
The meeting, held behind closed doors, comes as Matiang’i intensifies outreach to leaders across communities and political affiliations. Wamuchomba, who was elected on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, has increasingly distanced herself from the Kenya Kwanza administration, emerging as one of its most vocal critics. Despite her initial ties to the ruling coalition, she has lately aligned with opposition-leaning figures, previously voicing support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a cryptic social media post following the meeting, Wamuchomba wrote: “Consultations ongoing… Wantam (One term) is inevitable,” a statement many interpret as a swipe at the current administration and a subtle endorsement of the growing opposition alliance.
Matiang’i, who recently declared his presidential ambitions, has been engaging top opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and even Gachagua—suggesting a potential broad-based coalition in the making. The group has made joint public appearances, including attending the recent wedding of Kalonzo Musyoka’s son, further cementing speculation of a united front.
Speaking at Gusii Stadium on May 2, Matiang’i officially declared his intention to vie for the presidency in 2027. Responding to public calls for leadership, he committed to resigning from his current World Bank role to fully focus on his campaign. “I am ready to be President of Kenya,” he said, met with cheers from supporters.
On Monday, Gachagua appeared to endorse Matiang’i’s capability, praising his administrative track record in Interior, Education, and ICT ministries under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
As the opposition continues to close ranks, Matiang’i’s growing influence signals a potential shift in the 2027 political landscape, with alliances forming beyond traditional party lines.
