Presidential hopeful Dr. Fred Matiang’i has dismissed allegations that he is secretly working with President William Ruto to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking during the funeral of Judith Mwakairo, grandmother to former Agriculture CS Peter Munya, in Muthara, Tigania East Constituency, Matiang’i described the accusations as propaganda driven by political rivals.
“Hawa watu wameshindwa na kazi, sasa kazi yao ni kulipa bloggers waseme Kalonzo, Matiang’i sijui wameenda wapi! A government by blogging,” Matiang’i said, urging Kenyans not to lose faith in leadership. He called on young people to register as voters, saying true change would only come through active participation in elections.
The Jubilee Party member emphasized that leadership requires teamwork and inclusivity, not dominance or coercion. “If democracy means only one person’s opinion prevails, then we are killing democracy,” he remarked. Matiang’i further promised to restore the Linda Mama program immediately if elected president and to abolish the Affordable Housing levy, which he termed unfair.
Former Meru Governor and PNU Party Leader Peter Munya also used the occasion to stress that the United Opposition’s flag bearer should be chosen transparently, not through closed-door agreements. “We don’t want boardroom decisions on who will be the flag bearer. It must be someone with public backing, chosen through a fair process,” Munya stated.
Adding to the discussion, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni declared that the party had already settled on Matiang’i as its presidential candidate. “Track record must define who will lead the opposition. Whether you served for two weeks or two years, performance counts. For Jubilee, our preferred candidate is Matiang’i,” Kioni affirmed.
Matiang’i’s remarks come amid heightened political activity as opposition parties seek unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
