Matungulu residents have warmly welcomed President William Ruto to the Ukambani region ahead of his much-anticipated development tour, which had initially been scheduled to begin on May 21 but was rescheduled to next week. Despite the postponement, excitement remains high among local leaders and residents who are eager to engage with the President on key development matters.
Speaking to journalists, a group of grassroots leaders from Matungulu expressed optimism about Ruto’s visit, emphasizing their desire to partner with the national government in pursuing meaningful development for the region. “We are expecting our President, and we welcome him,” one of the leaders said. “We are not in opposition. There is no development when there is violence. Come help us the way you have helped other regions.”
The leaders, including Margaret Munyai, Joseph Matheka, Alice Kalekye, and Christian Munyoki, underscored that their primary focus is on the development of roads and other vital infrastructure. They also noted that while the area’s political leadership may lean toward the opposition, the people of Matungulu are firmly aligned with national development goals and are ready to walk the journey with Ruto.
Matungulu is part of the larger Ukambani region, which has historically lagged behind in infrastructure and economic growth. Residents are hopeful that President Ruto’s visit will mark a turning point for the area. They highlighted that Ukambani is a metropolitan region with diverse communities, all eager for transformation and government engagement.
Although the President’s visit was postponed, he held a consultative meeting at State House, Nairobi, with leaders from Ukambani to lay the groundwork for the tour. The upcoming itinerary includes major projects such as Konza City, Thwake Dam, Wote Stadium, the commissioning of the Emali–Ukia Road, and inspection of the Kibwezi–KituiBondoni Road especially the Kwa Siku to Bondo section.
The President’s tour is expected to bolster development, bridge gaps in service delivery, and foster a stronger relationship between the national government and local communities across Ukambani.
