The appointment of former Bungoma former Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati as the Chairperson of the Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF) Board of Trustees has been officially revoked. This announcement was made through a gazette notice issued on Friday by the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning, Ukur Yatani Mbadi.
Wangamati was initially appointed to the position on June 8, 2024, by former Treasury CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u, under the administration of President William Ruto. The appointment was to last three years, with Wangamati expected to steer the board responsible for managing billions in retirement savings for public servants.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 10 (1)(a) of the Public Service Superannuation Scheme Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning revokes the appointment of Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati as the Chairperson of the Public Service Superannuation Fund Board of Trustees, with effect from the 27th June, 2025,” the gazette notice read.
The revocation, which takes effect immediately, did not specify the reasons behind the move, but it comes amid increasing scrutiny over appointments made during previous Cabinet tenures. It is also seen in the context of the new Treasury leadership aligning top institutional roles with its policy direction.
Wangamati, who served as Bungoma’s second governor between 2017 and 2022, had been attempting a political comeback through his public service role. His removal may mark a setback in that trajectory.
The PSSF plays a critical role in safeguarding retirement benefits for thousands of public officers across Kenya. Its leadership is therefore seen as pivotal in ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective fund management.
The Treasury is yet to announce Wangamati’s replacement. However, the revocation underscores the shifting political and administrative landscape, especially concerning state appointments initiated under previous Cabinet Secretaries.
Wangamati has not issued a public statement regarding the revocation. Political analysts now await whether he will challenge the decision or pivot toward other avenues in public service or politics.
