The family of missing Huduma Centre official, Hussein Abdirahman, has renewed its plea to the government to act decisively in tracing his whereabouts, nearly two months after he mysteriously disappeared.
Abdirahman, a senior government officer attached to the Wajir Huduma Centre, was last seen on July 8 while attending an official function in Wajir County. Photographs later presented in court show him seated among dignitaries at the event. However, just hours after the function, he vanished without a trace.
Speaking to the press, Abdirahman’s sister, Katra Abdirahman, accused authorities of remaining silent despite her brother’s position in public service.
“Hussein is a senior government official; he is not just a public officer, and the funny part is, we have not seen any efforts from the government to trace his whereabouts. Our question is, what is happening, what is the government doing?” she posed.
The Ajuran Professional Association, a community group, has also condemned the apparent lack of urgency, describing Hussein’s disappearance as a matter of national concern. “If he is not in the hands of the government, then they should help look for him, but now, the government is not looking for him, nor is it saying anything about his disappearance,” one of the elders lamented.
The family revealed that the prolonged silence has left them in anguish, with little information to hold onto. “It would have been better to know if he was dead or alive; now we don’t know anything,” a family member said, highlighting the emotional toll of uncertainty.
Alarmingly, relatives also warned that enforced disappearances and mysterious abductions in Northern Kenya are becoming increasingly frequent, calling on security agencies to take action before the trend deepens mistrust between residents and the state.
Shortly after Hussein went missing, his family filed a habeas corpus petition seeking to compel Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to either produce him or provide a credible account of his whereabouts by July 14. Despite this urgent plea, no progress has been reported.
Two months later, the family says their calls for justice remain unanswered as they continue to wait for answers.
