Hundreds of residents in Mombasa on Thursday, October 16, 2025, took to the streets in a peaceful procession to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away in India at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment.
The event, organised by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials, began at Mwembe Tayari and snaked through Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, Digo Road, and Nkrumah Road. Supporters, dressed in ODM colours, sang Luo and party songs while waving twigs and placards celebrating Raila’s political journey.
Although some business owners briefly closed their shops fearing unrest, the demonstrators maintained peace and order throughout the procession.
At the Mombasa County Assembly, the crowd broke into song and dance as youth leaders praised Raila’s enduring influence. Former nominated MCA Moses Aran, popularly known as Civiliser, described Raila as a man who deeply loved the Coast region, calling it his “political bedroom.”
“We will continue mourning Baba until Sunday when he is laid to rest,” Aran declared.
The procession concluded at Mapembeni along Moi Avenue without incident. Raila’s passing is expected to reshape the Coast region’s political landscape, where ODM’s influence, though still strong, has waned in recent years.
