Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has stepped down from his role as Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, marking the end of a prominent chapter in his political and public service career. Kuria announced his resignation on social media following a meeting with President Ruto, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve in various capacities within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“This evening I have met my boss and my friend, President William Ruto. The President has graciously accepted my decision to resign from government,” Kuria stated. He went on to reflect on his time in office, citing accomplishments tied to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which he claimed to have co-designed with the President during their 2022 campaign.
Kuria’s political trajectory in the Ruto administration was eventful. He initially served as Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry for 11 months before being moved to the Public Service, Delivery, and Performance Management docket for 9 months. After the dramatic fallout from the 2024 Gen-Z-led protests which pushed President Ruto to dismiss his entire Cabinet — Kuria transitioned into an advisory role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
Though he did not reveal his next move, Kuria said he would be focusing on “personal interests,” sparking speculation about a possible return to active politics or private sector involvement.
His resignation comes at a time of heightened political scrutiny and calls for government accountability, especially from Kenya’s youth, who have become increasingly vocal and influential. Kuria’s exit could signal more changes within Ruto’s inner circle as the President seeks to rebuild public trust and refine his administration’s economic strategy.
Despite his polarizing public persona, Kuria has been one of the most recognizable political figures in the Kenya Kwanza coalition. His departure from government raises questions about the future direction of the Bottom-Up agenda and whether the administration will introduce new voices to fill the vacuum left by his exit.
As the political landscape continues to shift, all eyes will be on Kuria’s next steps and how they may shape the future of Kenyan politics.
