Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a fresh warning to city residents. He revealed a new tactic used by criminals in the Central Business District (CBD): posing as police officers.
Arrest During Patrol
On Saturday night, Mosiria joined the National Police Service (NPS) in a routine patrol of the CBD. During the operation, they arrested a man suspected of robbery. He was found with police-issued handcuffs.
In a video shared by the county official, the suspect claimed he had picked the handcuffs from trash. However, Mosiria dismissed the explanation, linking him to gangs that harass and rob Kenyans by impersonating officers.
The man was taken to Central Police Station. Mosiria urged any victims who had encountered him to report to the police.
Rising Crime in the CBD
This arrest comes as residents raise alarm about a resurgence of criminal gangs. Many Nairobians have narrated cases of being harassed, extorted, or even drugged.
Mosiria warned of a dangerous substance called “Devil’s Breath.” Scientifically known as scopolamine, the drug is used by criminals in powder form. It can be blown in a victim’s face or transferred through handshakes and contaminated items. Victims often become disoriented and hand over their belongings without resistance.
Warning Against Fake Content Creators
The county officer also cautioned that some so-called content creators are part of the crime wave. “They pretend to be content creators during the day, but by 5pm, they begin stealing from unsuspecting people,” he said.
Crackdown to Continue
Mosiria assured residents that county enforcement officers will continue working with NPS to flush out gangs. Illegal structures often used as criminal hideouts will also be cleared.
“The public’s safety is our priority. We will intensify operations until criminal gangs are eradicated from the CBD,” he stated.
