Emotional scenes were witnessed on Saturday at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, as several mourners collapsed during the public viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Thousands of supporters, some arriving as early as dawn, flocked to the stadium to pay their final respects to the man many regarded as a symbol of democracy, resilience, and hope. The atmosphere was heavy with grief as chants, tears, and emotional songs filled the air.
According to witnesses, a number of mourners fainted after viewing the body, overwhelmed by emotions as they struggled to come to terms with Raila’s passing. Red Cross and St John Ambulance teams were on standby and swiftly attended to those who collapsed. Several individuals who sustained injuries in the commotion were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Security at the venue was tight, with police and military personnel maintaining order throughout the day. Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli personally oversaw crowd control efforts to ensure safety amid the massive turnout.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo is expected to hold a press briefing later today to outline further directions ahead of the burial scheduled for Sunday in Bondo.
Raila’s body is set to be ferried to his Bondo home later in the evening, where a night vigil will be held before the final rites.
For many Kenyans, Raila Odinga’s death marks the end of an era. His legacy as a freedom fighter, reformist, and champion of democracy continues to inspire millions who now mourn not just a political leader but a national hero whose vision shaped modern Kenya.
