Nyando MP Jared Okello has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political faction of orchestrating a hostile attack against Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during an empowerment event in Othaya, Nyeri County.
On Wednesday, DP Kindiki was met by a hostile crowd chanting “one term” slogans from outside the fence as he addressed locals. MP Okello alleges this was no coincidence but a deliberate effort by the so-called “Wamunyoro team” a name linked to opposition leaders frequently meeting at Gachagua’s home in Wamunyoro to intimidate the second in command.
Speaking to Citizen TV on Thursday, MP Okello said, “It is not happenstance that this is happening a day after the President and his deputy received a thunderous welcome in Homa Bay.” He added that the “Wamunyoro team” remains unsettled following their recent impeachment attempts, frustrated by President William Ruto’s growing popularity across Kenya.
Okello further argued that the youths who disrupted DP Kindiki were strategically positioned outside the perimeter fence, a known hallmark of hired troublemakers in Kenyan politics. “You can see those few boys chanting Ruto one-term were outside the perimeter fence. That in politics is a testament of hired goons to go and cause mayhem,” he said.
The MP insisted that the “Wamunyoro team” is struggling to accept President Ruto’s second term, as his support continues to rise beyond his traditional strongholds. “What was conceived as President Ruto can actually be a one-term president, is coming to be the reverse that he has a second chance at the cherry,” Okello observed.
The political rift involves heavyweight alliances, with Gachagua joining forces with Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) and Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party. Also aligned with this faction are former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
MP Okello’s remarks highlight the deepening political divisions in Kenya, reflecting a growing contest for influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. The hostility witnessed in Nyeri signals the challenges faced by the ruling coalition as it seeks to consolidate power amid a fragmented opposition.
