Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on the Mt Kenya region to rally behind President William Ruto, stressing that national unity is vital for Kenya’s prosperity and development.
Speaking during a church service at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Othaya, Nyeri County, Mudavadi urged the region not to be swayed by political rhetoric or changing media narratives, but to stay focused on the bigger picture unity and progress for all Kenyans.
Drawing inspiration from former President Mwai Kibaki, Mudavadi recalled an instance when Kibaki dismissed concerns about daily-changing newspaper headlines. “Kibaki said: ‘Bring all the newspapers of the week and read each headline. You’ll see the headline changes every day, so don’t let them distract you from your work.’ The message was clear stay focused on what truly matters, which is unity and development,” Mudavadi said.
He further challenged the Mt Kenya region to maintain its historical political influence by continuing to support the government. “Mt Kenya is highly privileged. Many other regions wish they had even a fraction of what you have. If you falter, know that we are ready to step in,” he said, adding, “Better a bird in hand than ten in the bush.”
Mudavadi also emphasized that leadership should not be viewed through the lens of tribal affiliation. “Western Kenya has never produced a president, yet we continue to support the government. The idea that you can only support a government if someone from your region is at the top is outdated and divisive,” he said.
He urged Mt Kenya residents to join other regions in building a united Kenya that focuses on service delivery rather than ethnic politics. His message comes amid ongoing national conversations about political realignments, succession politics, and regional representation in government.
Mudavadi’s remarks are likely to stir debate, especially in Mt Kenya, where political unity remains fragile amid differing views on President Ruto’s leadership and the region’s future stake in national politics.
