President William Ruto on Tuesday received a warm reception in Mukuru, Embakasi South, where residents broke into spirited chants of “Kumi bila break!” a popular slogan affirming their support for his ten-year leadership vision. The chant, which translates to “Ten years without a break,” echoed through the air as the President officially handed over 1,080 housing units under the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project.
Ruto, visibly energized by the crowd, encouraged them to repeat the slogan. “Ati mnasema?” he asked, prompting a thunderous response: “Kumi bila break!”
The event marked a major milestone in the government’s Affordable Housing Programme, one of the key pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The Mukuru development, which spans 56 acres, is currently the largest affordable housing project in the country. Once complete, it will deliver a total of 13,248 residential units aimed at transforming informal settlements into dignified urban estates.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura noted on Monday that the area will no longer be referred to as the Mukuru slums, but rather as Mukuru Estate a rebranding that symbolizes the community’s journey toward modern and dignified living.
Mwaura emphasized the project’s affordability, revealing that social housing units will go for as low as KSh3,900 per month. Additional units are priced at KSh7,250 and KSh21,160 for middle-income earners, ensuring that even those earning less than KSh20,000 monthly can access decent housing.
“This is part of our promise to construct at least 200,000 new houses every year for the next five years, targeting over five million Kenyans,” Mwaura stated.
President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to uplifting lives through affordable housing, job creation, and infrastructure development. The handover of the Mukuru units is not only a fulfillment of that promise but also a testament to the government’s resolve to eliminate slums and restore dignity to millions.
As the President wrapped up his visit, the chorus of “Kumi bila break” continued, signaling strong grassroots support for his second-term ambitions.
