Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged Kenyans not to generalize the entire police force based on the misconduct of a few rogue officers. Speaking during the 20th Commemoration of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) in Ngong, Kajiado County, Murkomen emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing individual cases of police brutality while supporting the wider security forces.
Murkomen stated that while there may be a few officers guilty of abusing their authority, this should not tarnish the image of the over 120,000 police officers in service. “A few people, two, three, four, or even 50 or 100 cannot be used to generalize and say all of them are violating human rights,” he said, acknowledging the recent public uproar following the death of teacher Albert Ojwang in police custody.
He reassured the public that justice will be served in cases where officers have violated the rights of citizens, noting that the government remains steadfast in President William Ruto’s pledge to end extrajudicial killings.
Murkomen reminded security officers of their constitutional duty to respect human rights and dignity in the course of their work. At the same time, he called on the public to respect law enforcement officers, highlighting the tough conditions under which many of them serve to protect the nation.
He warned that continued attacks and disrespect towards police could lead to disorder and undermine national stability. “Undermining police authority risks breeding anarchy,” he said, affirming that the government stands firmly behind officers who carry out their duties responsibly.
Commenting on recent protests in Nairobi and a violent incident in Nakuru where a protester brandished a panga at police, Murkomen stressed the need for peaceful and lawful demonstrations. He condemned looting and destruction of property, warning that such acts will not be tolerated.
“As we hold police officers accountable, we will also hold civilians accountable,” he concluded, affirming that the government’s priority remains ensuring safety and justice for all Kenyans.
