Kipchumba Murkomen has stirred political debate after hinting at a possible reunion between President William Ruto and opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a Sunday service at AIC Milimani, Murkomen highlighted the shared faith of both leaders, noting that they are affiliated with the same church. He argued that this common ground could pave the way for unity.
“William Ruto will be running in the elections and is from the AIC church. And the person leading the opposition is from the AIC church. So if you have the capacity, bring us together. So we can work as one,” Murkomen remarked.
His comments appeared to acknowledge Kalonzo as the de facto opposition flagbearer while extending an olive branch for possible collaboration. This comes despite Kalonzo repeatedly stating he would not work with the Kenya Kwanza administration, which he previously described as “blood-based.”
On September 7, Kalonzo reiterated his opposition stance, warning fellow Azimio leaders against wavering from their shared political agenda.
Meanwhile, allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have accused Ruto’s camp of desperation in trying to woo Kalonzo. Through the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua’s team alleged that the ruling regime was using “unconventional tactics” to scatter the opposition.
“That William Ruto is poaching Kalonzo day and night using men of cloth, local politicians, medicine men and rainmakers. It should be remembered that Ruto defeated Raila by just 200,000 votes,” the DCP statement read.
The remarks underscore Kenya Kwanza’s thin margin of victory in 2022, a factor that continues to fuel political maneuvering.
Although Gachagua maintains he is best placed to face Ruto in 2027, the opposition is yet to settle on a single candidate. According to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, a special committee has narrowed the list of possible flagbearers to four, with an official announcement expected soon.
