Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is set to begin a high-profile tour of six coastal counties from April 7 to April 12, 2025. The tour is part of the government’s ongoing Jukwaa la Usalama County Tours initiative, aimed at reinforcing peace, cohesion, and service delivery across the country.
This marks Murkomen’s first major national engagement since his appointment as Interior CS following President William Ruto’s recent Cabinet reshuffle. The week-long Coast Region tour will see the CS engage with local leaders, regional and county security teams, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), and peace committees.
A key focus of the tour is strengthening security in the region, which has recently experienced increased criminal activity. Just last week, a machete-wielding gang known as the “Panga Boys” struck in Msambweni sub-county, Kwale. In response, nine suspects were arrested on April 4 in a joint operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Police.
Murkomen’s visit will include on-the-ground assessments of security operations, especially in areas vulnerable to land and maritime threats. The tour also comes at a critical time as the region faces heightened risks from climate change and extreme weather events. The CS is expected to evaluate disaster preparedness measures in all six counties.
In addition to security matters, the tour emphasizes citizen engagement and service delivery. Murkomen will meet residents (Wananchi) to hear their concerns and feedback on public services, including the new Mobile ID Registration initiative launched after President Ruto directed that ID cards be issued free of charge.
Spot checks on the rollout of this service are planned throughout the region, reinforcing the government’s focus on accessibility and efficiency. Murkomen’s office described the Jukwaa la Usalama forums as “an opportunity for direct feedback, transparent dialogue, and action-oriented collaboration.”
The tour underscores the government’s commitment to tailored regional responses, with Murkomen at the helm of a strategy that blends security enforcement with grassroots engagement and service improvement.
