Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to former security officers misusing their skills for lawless activities, saying the government will not tolerate the militarization of political expression.
Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum, Murkomen condemned recent incidents in parts of the country where individuals, some believed to be ex-officers, have been seen brandishing sophisticated weapons and issuing threats online.
“What we are witnessing in parts of the country is deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable masquerading as freedom of expression,” said Murkomen. “Individuals brazenly brandishing sophisticated weapons, issuing threats online, and behaving like an organized militia is not free speech. That is lawlessness.”
The CS emphasized that such actions will not be excused through political or legal loopholes, and that those responsible would be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted. He also reminded the judiciary of its crucial responsibility in ensuring national security.
“Let me be clear: I am not threatening the judiciary. I am simply stating the facts as they are. When criminals especially those involved in terrorism, organized crime, and armed violence are apprehended, the courts must act decisively,” he added.
Murkomen praised Kenya’s security forces for their persistent efforts to secure the country, especially from threats posed by terrorist group Al-Shabaab. He noted that just because there is no widespread media coverage does not mean the threat has disappeared.
“We continue to fight a vicious enemy. Just because you don’t hear about it doesn’t mean the Al-Shabaab challenge has stopped. Our gallant officers have done a fantastic job of securing our borders and foiling their attacks,” he said.
Murkomen’s remarks come amid rising concerns over the politicization of security and reports of former trained officers engaging in criminal activity. As part of the government’s broader national security agenda, he is expected to continue engaging communities and law enforcement in Laikipia and Kajiado counties through his Jukwaa la Usalama initiative.
