Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a firm warning to politicians who engage in incitement, emphasizing that the government will treat such actions as criminal offences, regardless of the individuals’ political standing or affiliations.
Speaking during a high-level security meeting held in Baringo County on Friday, Murkomen underscored the state’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the country. He warned that politicians fueling ethnic or political tensions would face the full force of the law, whether they are in government or opposition.
“There are politicians who thrive on incitement. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in government or the opposition if your words endanger lives, the law will deal with you,” said Murkomen. “We must protect our national unity and not allow divisive rhetoric to threaten our communities.”
The Interior CS, known for his extensive experience in politics, stated that while he is open to engaging political leaders in face-to-face conversations to address concerns, law enforcement agencies such as the National Police Service must be allowed to operate independently and without political influence.
“I will have face-to-face conversations with those involved, but the National Police Service must operate independently and free from political interference,” Murkomen said, adding that law and order cannot be selectively applied based on region or political loyalty.
Murkomen’s remarks come amid rising political tensions in various parts of the country, with concerns that inflammatory statements could spark unrest. He made it clear that the crackdown on incitement is part of a broader national strategy to ensure justice, accountability, and the impartial application of the law.
“Our goal is to create a secure environment where all Kenyans can coexist peacefully, regardless of their background or political beliefs. This requires holding everyone to the same legal standards,” he added.
The Interior Ministry’s position signals a renewed commitment to curbing hate speech and fostering political responsibility at all levels of leadership, as Kenya seeks to strengthen national cohesion and prevent violence often linked to charged political rhetoric.
