Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has criticized President William Ruto, saying Kenya’s fight against corruption cannot succeed under his leadership.
Speaking to Kameme TV’s Gatonye Wa Mbugua in Nairobi, Muturi said, “This war on corruption in Kenya, if the person leading it is Ruto, then we are going nowhere.”
Alleged Compromises and Corruption
Muturi questioned Ruto’s integrity, citing the alleged compromise of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party of Ali Roba after the 2022 elections. He also referred to an envelope containing Ksh500,000 seen with a former classmate of his, suggesting questionable conduct by the President’s associates.
Weak Anti-Corruption Institutions
The former AG accused key anti-corruption bodies of being weakened under Ruto. He said, “EACC has been captured such that it is very weak. DCI is in the middle of it.”
Muturi also raised concerns over government contracts. He noted that China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is handling multiple projects, including State House renovations, Talanta Hela stadium, and Bomas renovations, often through direct procurement despite his advice against it.
Financial Losses Under Ruto
Muturi highlighted financial mismanagement, pointing to Ksh6.2 billion lost due to the cancellation of the Lironi-Mau Summit.
Growing Concern Over Accountability
Muturi’s remarks suggest that Kenya’s fight against corruption may continue to be ineffective if leadership and institutions remain compromised. Political observers say his statements could influence public debates on governance and accountability, especially as the country approaches key political contests.
The former AG’s comments have sparked discussion about whether Kenya can achieve meaningful anti-corruption reform under the current leadership.
