The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has ramped up its anti-narcotics operations, following a series of successful multi-agency raids in Homa Bay and Kisii counties. These efforts are part of an ongoing nationwide campaign aimed at dismantling drug networks and safeguarding communities from the harms of substance abuse.
In Oyugis, Homa Bay County, a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving NACADA, the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), and the Administration Police Service (APS) led to the arrest of two individuals. The suspects were found in possession of 400 packets of uncustomed cigarettes, 14 packets of a popular cigarette brand, suspected cannabis sativa, and cash believed to be proceeds from the illegal trade. Authorities suspect the contraband cigarettes were smuggled into the country without proper customs clearance, in violation of trade and revenue regulations.
The two individuals are currently held at Oyugis Police Station as investigations continue.
In a separate operation in Kisii County, NACADA, in partnership with the National Police Service (NPS), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and ANU Nyanza Region, uncovered a suspected drug storage and processing site in Nyakongo Village, Kitutu Central Subcounty. During the raid, officers seized two 90-kilogramme sacks of dried plant material believed to be cannabis sativa and 134 brooms suspected to be laced with narcotics. Eight suspects were apprehended and remain in custody as authorities prepare to press charges.
These developments follow the recent dismantling of a major drug distribution network in Kisii, which was allegedly linked to a notorious drug baron.
NACADA has reaffirmed its commitment to a multi-agency approach in combating drug abuse, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with law enforcement and intelligence agencies. “These arrests reflect our strategic momentum in breaking up drug syndicates and protecting our communities,” the agency stated.
Members of the public are urged to report any drug-related activities anonymously through NACADA’s toll-free hotline 1192, as the agency continues to fight against the rising tide of illicit drug trade in Kenya.
