Former Roots Party running mate Justina Wamae has sounded the alarm over the worsening insecurity in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), warning that residents are increasingly exposed to harassment, theft, and violent attacks.
In a statement on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Wamae said Nairobi is facing a “severe leadership crisis,” comparing the current wave of insecurity to incidents last seen during the tenure of the late Karissa Maitha as Minister for Local Government.
“Just to remind you, the last time we had such incidents in Nairobi, the late Karissa Maitha was Minister for Local Government. Talk about retrogression!” Wamae stated.
She urged leaders to prioritize security and economic empowerment over petty political theatrics.
“Creating wealth for the nation Kenya is bigger than wantam and tutam shenanigans,” she added.
Rising Cases of Theft in Nairobi CBD
Her warning follows growing public outcry as residents and social media users share experiences of being mugged, drugged, and robbed in the CBD. Videos circulating online show gangs targeting phones, handbags, and valuables, often using intimidation and violence.
Popular TikTok personality Mjaka Mfine recently raised concern in a viral video, claiming criminals are reviving the notorious tactic of threatening to smear human waste on victims.
“They are back. The thieves who smear human faeces onto people are back. They’re operating across Nairobi, especially near Galitos. Be alert,” he said.
Other users have echoed similar warnings, urging Nairobians to avoid displaying their phones, walk in groups, and use alternative routes when possible.
“It’s not safe at all. These criminals are out to harm, not just to steal,” said resident Maimuna Abdinasir.
Reports also indicate rising cases of theft in matatus, with passengers losing phones while boarding or alighting.
Call for Action
With insecurity on the rise, Wamae’s remarks amplify calls for authorities to act swiftly to restore safety and public confidence in the capital.
