Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he will lead the opposition in the 2027 elections.
Natembeya’s Position
Speaking on Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, Natembeya said no one should declare themselves as the opposition flagbearer. He described Gachagua’s move as misguided, insisting that the decision will only be made after wide consultation.
“We must agree as the opposition, and no one should beat his chest claiming that he is the flag bearer. These are just cold facts,” Natembeya stated.
He explained that the choice of a presidential candidate will depend on two key factors: the number of supporters a leader can bring and the resources they can mobilize for the race.
Opposition’s Goal
Natembeya stressed that the opposition’s priority is to remain united in countering President William Ruto’s agenda. He accused Ruto’s government of failing to deliver on promises and worsening poverty across the country.
“The aim of everyone who is in the opposition is removing the President from his seat. Not because we don’t love him, but because he has yet to fulfill his promises to Kenyans,” he said.
Gachagua’s Response
On Sunday, September 14, Gachagua declared that he will be on the ballot. Speaking during a church service, he dismissed claims that his impeachment made him unfit to run.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader promised to focus on healthcare, housing, and education if elected.
“I am a candidate to be president of the Republic of Kenya. I am qualified, and I have support. I am looking for more support, and I will be on the ballot,” he said.
What Lies Ahead
Natembeya’s remarks highlight the growing rift within the opposition. The final decision on who carries the flag will shape the strategy against President Ruto in 2027.
