Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has donated 15 bulls and 15 bags of maize to the family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo. The gesture, he said, was a “humble token” of deep appreciation for Raila’s monumental contribution to Kenya’s political and social development.
Speaking while delivering the donation, Natembeya described Raila as a political father who nurtured generations of leaders and tirelessly advocated for justice, democracy, and unity across all communities.
“As a political father, he nurtured leaders across generations and championed the bond between the Mulembe and Nyanza regions, a unity that remains the bedrock of our political and social cohesion,” Natembeya said. He added that he remains committed to advancing Raila’s vision of a united, prosperous, and just Kenya.
Earlier, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had also sent a similar gift of bulls to Raila’s ancestral home in Opodo. A delegation of Western Kenya elders, adorned in traditional regalia, delivered the animals as a sign of solidarity and respect from the Mulembe community.
One elder remarked, “Today we are bringing cows from our minister in solidarity with the departed,” while another used a symbolic proverb, saying, “If you put ugali without greens, it burns you. So we brought greens here cows and other items to honour the family.”
For the Luhya community, gifting livestock during mourning symbolizes honour, respect, and shared sorrow.
Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15 at the age of 80, is being mourned across the nation and beyond for his lifelong fight for multiparty democracy, social justice, and constitutional reform. His passing has united Kenyans from all walks of life in shared grief and remembrance of a leader whose influence shaped the country’s democratic journey.
