Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has firmly dismissed claims that he is considering joining the Kenya Kwanza administration following a recent visit by Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, to Kitale.
The governor clarified that his hosting of the CS was purely based on protocol and not political alignment. Speaking in Kitale, Natembeya explained that Murkomen had paid a courtesy call to the county commissioner’s office before proceeding to the county government offices as part of official procedure.
“The CS signed the visitors’ book as required, and it would have been improper for me, as the host governor, not to receive a senior government official. This does not indicate any political shift,” said Natembeya.
He dismissed the defection speculation as “cheap propaganda” meant to distract from his firm stand against the Kenya Kwanza government, adding that he and other opposition leaders remain committed to pushing for change in the country.
“My stand and that of my colleagues is clear. We are advocating for transformation in this country, and we’re already paying the price for it. Hosting a CS doesn’t mean I’ve changed my convictions,” he said.
Natembeya reiterated that he would not compromise his principles for political gain or government positions. “I’ve worked in government before. Being offered a CS position does not excite me. I am already serving the people as an elected governor,” he stated.
The county boss said he had no intention of running away from his office simply because a national government official visited the county. He emphasized that the CS continued with his engagements after their brief meeting, while he travelled to Nairobi for scheduled Senate meetings.
Governor Natembeya urged residents and supporters to remain focused and not fall for political distractions. “Let’s not support politics of convenience. We must take positions that benefit the people, not individuals seeking power,” he said.
CS Murkomen was in Trans Nzoia County for the Jukwaa La Usalama forum, an initiative aimed at promoting public safety and security dialogue across the country.
