Shock, grief, and outrage have swept across the nation following the brutal murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was shot dead along Ngong Road in Nairobi on Wednesday night. Police have described the incident as a “targeted and predetermined” attack, sparking widespread calls for justice from political leaders and citizens alike.
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Were as a dedicated public servant. “May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul the strength to bear the loss. We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation. Those responsible must be held to account,” said the President.
Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru termed the killing a tragic loss and condemned the act of violence, urging authorities to act swiftly. “Such acts of violence have no place in our society,” she stated.
ODM leader Raila Odinga expressed deep sorrow and anger, calling Were a “gallant son of the soil” and condemning the cold-blooded assassination. “Rest in Peace Hon Sir Charles Ong’ondo Were! Dhi gi kwe Ogai ma Milamb,” he mourned in Dholuo, appealing for justice.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale recalled Were’s passionate service in Parliament, describing him as a strong advocate for his constituents. “Such brutality must be condemned in the strongest terms possible,” he said.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah Okoiti decried the increasing lawlessness in the country. “That a sitting legislator who had expressed fears for his life could be assassinated in the capital is utterly unacceptable,” he said, demanding an independent investigation.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi also conveyed their condolences, describing the death as a deep wound to the Kenyan Parliament and the nation.
As the investigation unfolds, the public and leaders continue to press for accountability. Charles Ong’ondo Were’s legacy as a humble and committed leader lives on but his death raises urgent questions about security and the protection of public servants in Kenya.
