Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has officially resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), sparking speculation about his next political move.
In a resignation letter dated November 7, 2025, Havi addressed UDA Secretary General and copied the Registrar of Political Parties, formally notifying the party of his decision. “I hereby give notice of resignation as a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) effective today, in accordance with Section 14 of The Political Parties Act, Cap 7D of the Laws of Kenya,” Havi wrote. He further requested that the Registrar remove his name from the party’s membership list.
Havi joined UDA in 2021 after declaring his intention to contest the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 general elections. He was welcomed to the party by William Ruto, who at the time was Deputy President and a presidential candidate. Havi, however, lost the Westlands race to incumbent Tim Wanyonyi.
While Havi did not explicitly state the reasons for leaving UDA, he has hinted at a return to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). “The People of Westlands have, however, put only one condition on me. They have asked that I resign from UDA and join ODM. I have been in ODM before. My departure was necessitated by the need then to challenge the dismemberment of the Constitution through the BBI initiative,” Havi noted in a previous statement.
Observers see Havi’s resignation as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 elections. Tim Wanyonyi, the current Westlands MP, is expected to vie for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, potentially leaving the parliamentary seat open. Havi has expressed readiness to contest Westlands again, emphasizing that his decision aligns with public demand.
Havi’s political maneuvering highlights the dynamic nature of party affiliations in Kenya, where leaders often shift alignments in response to public sentiment and electoral opportunities. His next steps, particularly a potential ODM affiliation, are now the focus of political watchers.
