Residents of Kamatuto Estate in Njiru, Nairobi County, have honoured the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by naming a local road after him. The road, now known as Raila Odinga Road, was unveiled in a colourful community event led by the Kamatuto residents’ chairperson and boda boda operators.
Speaking during the ceremony, the chairperson noted that the move was a heartfelt tribute to Raila, who once served as Kenya’s Roads Minister and played a key role in advancing the country’s infrastructure.
“I am the chairman of Kamatuto, Njiru, and we are here today as residents and the Njiru office to remember Baba. We have decided to have the Raila Odinga Road here in Kamatuto,” he stated.
The residents also used the event to call on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri to improve the road, which is currently in poor condition. The three-kilometre stretch runs from Kangundo Road through Kamatuto Estate and connects to Mwiki, serving as a crucial link within the Njiru area.
According to the residents, upgrading the road would not only ease transport but also stimulate local economic growth by connecting Kamatuto to the larger Kasarani constituency.
This is not the first road named in Raila’s honour. In 2021, the Nairobi County government renamed Mbagathi Way to Raila Odinga Way, acknowledging his immense contribution to Kenya’s democratic and infrastructural development.
Raila, a towering figure in Kenya’s political landscape for decades, passed away on October 15, 2025. His influence and legacy continue to inspire acts of recognition across the country the latest being the renaming of Kamatuto’s main road in his memory.
