Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, alongside a section of opposition leaders, were on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, allowed to lay wreaths along Parliament Road in memory of youth killed during last year’s Gen Z protests. The solemn gesture unfolded peacefully, with no attempt by the leaders to breach the razor wire barricade erected by security forces.
The leaders began their day at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi, where they held prayers just outside the church, foregoing a formal service. They then walked in a quiet procession towards Parliament Road, which had been heavily fortified with razor wire and anti-riot police in anticipation of possible protests.
Upon reaching the barricade, Kalonzo and his delegation, shielded by his security team, knelt and laid flowers while offering brief prayers in memory of those who lost their lives during the June 2024 demonstrations. The act, though simple, carried profound symbolism for many Kenyans who view the day as a turning point in the country’s political and civic discourse.
Addressing the media earlier, Kalonzo stated that their presence was purely to honour the youth who had fallen during last year’s protests. “Today, we just want to remember these young people. We intend to lay wreaths in their memory,” he said.
Kalonzo further emphasized the significance of June 25, proposing that it be recognized as a national day of remembrance. “Even if we are denied access to Parliament today, this day must be properly commemorated as a national holiday in the future.”
The former Vice President also noted that many Kenyans had chosen to stay home on this day, describing the city’s deserted streets and extensive barricades as reflective of national mourning. “A lot of Kenyans have chosen to stay at home in sympathy with the June 2024 deaths. It truly feels like a public holiday,” he remarked.
Despite heightened tensions, the leaders’ actions were met with calm from security personnel, with no incident reported, marking a respectful and drama-free tribute to the fallen youth.
