Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday dismissed reports of a police attempt to arrest him, saying no security agency has formally summoned him. The statement came after a dramatic Sunday incident where Gachagua evaded a police dragnet in Murang’a and rushed to his home in Wamunyoro, Nyeri, following a reported police siege at his residences.
Police had reportedly positioned themselves at his Wamunyoro home in an apparent effort to arrest him over alleged incitement remarks he had made previously. The move sparked tense scenes, with Gachagua choosing to go into hiding after learning about the arrest plans. The security operation, described by his legal team as a “siege,” extended to his Karen residence as well.
Addressing the media from his Wamunyoro home on Monday, Gachagua maintained that he is ready to cooperate with any lawful investigation, provided he is formally summoned. “They know all my homes, and I am here; they know my Wamunyoro home. They do not need to waylay me on the road. Let them just come here, and if I have committed a crime, they can come and arrest me and take whatever action they want to take,” he stated firmly.
He also accused the security forces of attempting to frame him by planting weapons in his convoy, a claim he said made him fear for his life. Gachagua expressed disappointment that instead of coming to his home, the authorities chose to intercept him on the road, which he deemed unnecessary and provocative.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, condemned the police’s actions, describing the situation as a manhunt with unclear reasons. Meanwhile, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the incident as an act of political intimidation, calling for due process to be followed. “If you want to arrest Gachagua, do it the right way; follow the law. We are prepared to produce DP Gachagua before the DCI,” Kalonzo declared.
Gachagua further claimed that he had previously reported attacks against him to security agencies, but no action was taken, highlighting concerns about his personal safety. The standoff underscores the tense political environment and raises questions about the handling of high-profile political figures in the country.
