The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has issued new guidelines ahead of the recruitment of 10,000 police constables. The exercise is expected to start immediately, with successful candidates reporting to training colleges later this year.
In a statement on September 5, the Commission said the guidelines will make the process more transparent and fair. The aim is to ensure that only qualified candidates are selected based on merit.
“The Commission has adopted regulations to promote transparency and ensure merit-based selection in the recruitment process,” the statement read.
NPSC added that it has already approved a roadmap to guide the entire process. This includes applications, selection, and training. All instruments needed to launch the exercise are now in place.
The announcement follows remarks by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. Speaking at the OCS Consultative Conference on September 4, he said the government would confirm the recruitment dates within a week. “By Monday, we should know the day we are going to have the recruitment,” Murkomen stated.
President William Ruto had also confirmed that the recruitment will happen in September. He directed that 4,000 of the new officers should be drawn from the National Youth Service (NYS). “When we recruit 10,000 police officers, 4,000 of them must come from the NYS,” he said during the NYS passing-out parade in Gilgil, Nakuru, on August 28.
The Commission also announced the election of Prof. Collette Suda as its new Vice-Chairperson. She is expected to play a key role in overseeing the recruitment exercise.
The recruitment drive is part of the government’s plan to strengthen the police service for the 2025–2026 financial year.
