Members of the Nyeri County Assembly (MCAs) have dismissed reports suggesting a plot to impeach Governor Mutahi Kahiga, following his controversial remarks regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, October 30, the ward representatives insisted that no motion had been tabled or discussed to remove the governor from office. They accused unnamed political actors of spreading misinformation to create divisions and portray the Mt Kenya region as being deeply tribal.
“I have not heard of any plans to bring such a motion because it will be a waste of time and resources unless it is a constitutional issue such as misappropriation of funds,” said Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku. “In normal situations, impeachment of a governor always leaves counties more divided than united. His only mistake was to utter bad words against Raila Odinga, for which he apologised.”
The clarification comes just two days after a petition was filed at the High Court in Nairobi seeking to have Governor Kahiga declared unfit to hold office. The petitioners argued that his inflammatory remarks against Raila Odinga threatened national unity and urged the court to suspend him from performing his official duties until the case is determined.
Governor Kahiga found himself in hot water on October 22 after making provocative comments in Kikuyu, suggesting that Raila’s death was a “blessing in disguise” for the Mt Kenya region, claiming it would redirect government resources to Central Kenya.
Despite the public backlash, the Nyeri MCAs emphasized that the county administration remains united and focused on development and service delivery for residents. They called for an end to divisive politics, urging leaders and citizens alike to prioritize peace and unity.
Governor Kahiga has since issued an apology, stating that his remarks were taken out of context and reaffirming his commitment to national cohesion.
