Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has delivered an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and dignity for all Kenyans.
Speaking on Saturday when he joined a delegation of governors at Raila’s home, Nyong’o said coming to terms with Raila’s death remains a great challenge for the nation.
“It is not easy to accept that Jakom has left us. It will be very difficult for us, but we must find courage in his words, that there is a promised land, and Kenya will get there,” Nyong’o said.
The governor likened Raila’s lifelong political journey to that of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., recalling the iconic words from King’s final sermon in Memphis: “I have seen the promised land, but I may not get there with you.”
“Before Raila left us, he reminded us of that promise the dream of a better Kenya where every citizen enjoys dignity, equality, and opportunity,” he said.
Nyong’o urged leaders to inherit Raila’s mission and continue the struggle for justice and inclusivity. “Where Kenya is today is not the promised land he envisioned, but through Raila’s eyes we saw it. He gave us faith that it exists, and it is attainable if we stay united and true to his ideals,” he added.
The delegation, led by Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, also praised Raila’s pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s democratic and devolved governance.
“There is no way the story of devolution in Kenya can be told without Raila Odinga’s name appearing on nearly every page,” Abdullahi stated.
The Council expressed deep solidarity with the Odinga family, describing Raila’s passing as a moment of national reflection on the values he so passionately championed democracy, equity, and service.
