Acting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga has come out strongly in defence of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying he accurately represents the official position of the party. Oburu called on members to avoid unnecessary internal wrangles and instead work towards strengthening the party’s unity ahead of future political contests.
Speaking during an interview on NTV, Oburu dismissed claims that Sifuna should face disciplinary action or be ousted from his role as the party’s Secretary-General. He insisted that Sifuna’s statements reflect ODM’s collective stance, not personal opinions or dissent.
“When Sifuna says what he says, he is within his right and that is the correct position of the party. He is not isolated,” Oburu stated.
He further emphasised that Sifuna has been loyal and diligent in executing his duties, adding that this is not the time to create divisions within ODM.
“I don’t think this is the time to talk about the ouster of any member. This is the time to unite the party, and we need all members including Sifuna. In my view, he is doing a good job,” Oburu added.
Oburu’s comments come amid growing internal debate following Sifuna’s recent statements asserting that ODM has no political agreement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) beyond 2027.
While Sifuna has maintained that ODM will pursue its independent agenda, some senior figures within the party have suggested that ODM should consider backing President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Oburu’s intervention appears aimed at calming tensions and reaffirming ODM’s commitment to internal democracy and unity. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, his remarks could help stabilise the party’s leadership dynamics and refocus members on its broader political goals.
