Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has revealed the touching and humorous story behind the distinctive marks on the face of his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Speaking during the State Funeral Service held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo on Sunday, Oburu shared intimate childhood memories that drew laughter and emotion from mourners.
According to Oburu, Raila sustained the mark on his forehead while they were in Germany and another on his mouth after a playful fall from a mango tree during their childhood days in Kisumu.
“Raila fell from a mango tree while we were playing. I had to carry him on my back. People were laughing at us as I cried after he got injured,” Oburu recounted, evoking laughter from the audience.
Oburu went on to describe Raila as a brave and strong-willed man, traits that defined his political journey and leadership style. “He once told our father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, to come with us to the farm to pick cotton since it was such a difficult task,” he recalled, highlighting Raila’s early defiance and leadership spirit.
The senator also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Raila’s medical team and staff for their commitment, and he paid glowing tribute to Raila’s wife, Mama Ida Odinga, for her unwavering support throughout his political struggles and long detentions.
“Mama Ida was very young when Raila was detained at 37. She remained committed to him. Some of you wouldn’t have sustained that—you’re too hot,” he joked, sending mourners into laughter once more.
The emotional yet lighthearted tribute painted a deeply personal picture of the late statesman, celebrating not only his political legacy but also the humanity and resilience that defined Raila Odinga’s life.
