Laughter filled Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, 2025, after Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga offered what many called an “uncanny but honest” reason for marrying a second, younger wife. The moment unfolded during the state funeral of the late ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga, turning an emotional ceremony into one sprinkled with humour and warmth.
Addressing thousands of mourners and dignitaries gathered to honour his brother’s life, Oburu publicly introduced both his wives for the first time. The Senator said the gesture was meant to maintain peace at home and to acknowledge both women openly.
“She is the one who took me from boyhood. She has been and is still nice to me,” Oburu said, referring to his first wife. “At my age, I don’t want her to scratch me, to massage me, so I brought her helper, Judith Oburu,” he added, sending the crowd into fits of laughter.
The lighthearted admission drew cheers from the packed stadium, which included national leaders, foreign dignitaries, religious figures, and members of the Odinga family.
However, the cheerful tone soon gave way to emotion as Oburu paid a heartfelt tribute to his late brother. “He was my brother, my friend, my confidant and adviser,” he said, his voice breaking as he reflected on their lifelong bond.
Oburu also thanked the ODM Party for naming him acting party leader, pledging to continue Raila’s legacy of leadership and integrity.
Later, Mama Ida Odinga, the widow of the late Raila Odinga, honoured her husband’s memory, describing him as a man of courage and principle. “He hated dishonesty and greed the kind that leads to corruption,” she said.
Oburu’s humorous yet tender moment reminded mourners that even in grief, laughter and love remain powerful ways to celebrate a life well lived.
