Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga has pledged to carry forward his late brother Raila Odinga’s political legacy with commitment and humility after being appointed as the acting leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during the State Funeral at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, Oburu expressed deep gratitude to ODM leaders and members for entrusting him with the responsibility to steer the party during its transition period.
“I want to thank my party, ODM, for making me the party leader,” he said. “Even though the shoes of Raila are too big to be filled, I just want to try my best.”
Oburu acknowledged the monumental impact Raila had on Kenya’s political landscape and vowed to uphold the principles and values that have defined ODM for nearly two decades.
“ODM is the oldest and largest party in East and Central Africa,” he noted. “I will take that mantle with vigour and I must assure you, my colleagues, that I will not disappoint.”
His appointment came after a unanimous decision by the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday. In a statement, the party announced that Oburu would assume the role of acting party leader with immediate effect to ensure stability and continuity following Raila’s passing.
“The NEC met this morning and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” read the ODM statement.
Oburu steps into the leadership role at a defining moment for ODM as it seeks to navigate the post-Raila era and redefine its direction in Kenya’s evolving political landscape. His leadership is expected to provide a sense of continuity and unity among ODM supporters as the party plans its next phase.
