The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has officially forgiven Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following his controversial remarks that appeared to celebrate Raila’s death.
Speaking during an interview on NTV on Saturday, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother and head of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga family, said the family holds no grudge and remains open to reconciliation.
Oburu emphasized that forgiveness and unity remain at the heart of their family’s values, noting that political rivalry should never breed permanent hostility.
“No one is barred from coming to Kang’o ka Jaramogi to mourn, including Kahiga, if he is remorseful,” he said.
“In politics, there is no permanent enmity.”
He further noted that harboring resentment only burdens the heart, adding that the family chooses peace and understanding over conflict.
“Those comments do not annoy me… I excuse them. If you hold a grudge, your heart can stop earlier than God’s plan,” he remarked.
Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in India. His death sent shockwaves across the country, with messages of condolence pouring in from leaders and citizens alike.
Shortly after his passing, Governor Kahiga came under fire for describing Raila’s death as “a godsend to Mt Kenya people,” claiming it would allow for a re-evaluation of government resource distribution. His remarks, made during a burial in Kieni Constituency, drew widespread condemnation.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga responded sharply, declaring Kahiga unwelcome in Bondo. However, her stance also faced criticism for appearing divisive.
By extending forgiveness, the Odinga family has chosen to close the chapter on political bitterness, urging Kenyans to embrace reconciliation and unity values Raila Odinga himself often championed throughout his political life.
