The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will mark its 20th anniversary with a grand celebration in Mombasa from October 10 to 12. Party officials say the event will signal a rebirth as ODM positions itself for the 2027 general election.
The three-day celebration will bring together ODM leaders, members, and supporters in Mombasa, a key party stronghold.
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed thanked Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir for hosting the event.
“This occasion reminds us where we came from, where we are, and where we want to go. It is a rebirth of our party and an inspiration as we look to 2027,” said Mohamed.
Governor Nassir called the anniversary both a political and national milestone.
“Mombasa is honored to host this historic occasion. These celebrations are not just about the life of a political party, but about the values and aspirations of Kenyans,” he said.
ODM’s Journey
ODM was formed in 2005 after Kenya’s constitutional referendum. The “No” campaign, symbolized by the orange, united leaders against proposed changes. The party was officially registered in 2006 under Raila Odinga’s leadership.
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna praised the party’s endurance over two decades and urged members to embrace the milestone.
“To birth a party and keep it alive for 20 years is no easy task. This celebration is just that—a celebration from start to finish,” he said.
Key Events
The anniversary will feature:
- Youth Summit: Young leaders discuss their role in shaping Kenya’s future.
- Women Convention: Highlighting women’s contributions to democracy and inclusivity.
- Youth Concert: Music and creative performances celebrating the “Orange spirit.”
- Football Tournament: AFC Leopards, Bandari FC, Gor Mahia, and Shabana FC will compete, symbolizing unity through sport.
Nationwide Pre-Events
ODM will also hold activities across the country, including in Migori and Wajir, highlighting grassroots engagement and inclusivity.
Officials said the anniversary will not only celebrate ODM’s past but also energize its base for the battles ahead in 2027.
