The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is preparing for its 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa from October 10 to 12. The three-day event will bring together founding members, party leaders, and supporters.
Dignitaries invited include President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga described the occasion as a reunion for the party’s founding members.
“We are going to be very pleased that this is going to be a reunion of those who began ODM and still exist,” Wanga said.
Remembering ODM’s Origins
ODM was formed during the 2005 constitutional referendum where the “No” campaign won with 58.12% of the vote. The orange symbolized the “No” side, while the banana represented “Yes.”
Following the referendum, ODM was formally registered under Raila Odinga’s leadership in 2006. Founders included Raila, Ruto, Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Gitobu Imanyara, Najib Balala, and the late Joe Nyagah.
In 2007, the party split into ODM (led by Raila) and ODM-Kenya (now Wiper Democratic Movement).

The celebrations will honour both past and present contributors, especially young leaders who fought for democracy.

Looking Ahead to 2027
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed described the anniversary as a “rebirth” of the party.
“This occasion reminds us where we came from, where we are, and where we want to go. It is a rebirth of our party and an inspiration as we look to 2027,” he said.
The celebrations mark 20 years of ODM, reflecting its resilience, vision, and continued relevance in Kenya’s political landscape.
