The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called for an urgent Central Committee meeting set for Monday, as internal divisions deepen over the party’s stance on its participation in President William Ruto’s broad-based government.
ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that the meeting will be chaired by interim party leader Dr. Oburu Odinga. The gathering comes at a critical moment for the party, following the passing of its long-serving leader, Raila Odinga, which has left a significant leadership void.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Nassir said the meeting will focus on three main agendas: preparations for upcoming by-elections, the celebration of ODM’s 20th anniversary, and a review of the 10-point agenda signed between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“We will have a special Central Committee meeting that Oburu Odinga will be chairing on Monday with three main agendas focusing on upcoming by-elections, celebrating ODM at 20, where we will celebrate the 80 years we had with our party leader, the late Raila Odinga, and discussing the 10-point agenda signed between UDA and ODM,” Nassir stated.
He further emphasized that the meeting will address issues of internal cohesion as the party seeks to realign its identity and direction.
“Our opponents want to see us fall, but we will be meeting where we will forge the way forward and iron out the ideological differences that appear to emerge,” Nassir added.
The announcement comes amid growing speculation of a looming Cabinet reshuffle following President Ruto’s recent political agreement with KANU leader Gideon Moi, signaling possible realignments within the government.
As political analysts debate the implications of the reshuffle, ODM’s meeting is expected to provide crucial insight into the opposition party’s next chapter in Kenya’s shifting political landscape.
