The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has addressed growing speculation surrounding Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga’s possible positioning as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Monday morning during an interview on NTV, ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir stated that the decision, if ever on the table, would strictly follow internal party procedures and strategic analysis.
“Would I propose her to be the DP? First, I’d have to sit down with her and ask if she’s interested in the position,” Nassir explained. “There are many capable leaders, but if she agrees, that proposal would have to be deliberated by the Central Management Committee.”
Nassir, who also serves as the Governor of Mombasa County, emphasized that any such decision would be data-driven, considering regional balance, political strategy, and the party’s numerical strength. He stressed that ODM’s leadership would evaluate all potential candidates across regions before settling on any name.
While Wanga’s name has been floated in political circles since before the passing of ODM leader Raila Odinga, Nassir clarified that she has not expressed any interest in the deputy presidency. He also ruled out his own interest in the position, reaffirming his focus on serving Mombasa residents.
At the same time, Nassir reiterated that ODM is not in a coalition agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), but rather part of a broad-based government arrangement aimed at national unity.
“There’s no crisis in ODM,” he said. “We are firmly in the Broad-based Government, but not in a coalition. Future cooperation will depend on the success of the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year.”
ODM is set to hold a Central Committee meeting later on Monday, chaired by acting party leader Oburu Odinga, to discuss upcoming by-elections, ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations, and progress on the UDA-ODM 10-point agenda.
