Bright orange flags waved in unison as ODM delegates gathered at the railway station, breaking into song and dance while awaiting departure on the SGR to Mombasa. The lively atmosphere reflected both excitement and reverence as supporters prepared to attend the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
Many delegates donned traditional attire, representing Kenya’s rich cultural diversity, while Isikuti drummers and dancers added rhythmic beats to the festive scene. Portraits of the late party leader Raila Odinga were also prominently displayed, reminding supporters of his enduring influence just as ODM marks two decades of political service.
ODM launched a massive mobilisation drive encouraging supporters to book their SGR tickets early. The celebrations, scheduled from November 14-16, will feature rallies, cultural showcases, and community engagements across Mombasa. Party officials urged all supporters to travel together on the morning SGR train on November 13 to ensure a unified presence.
“Let’s SGR together! Book your SGR ticket now so we can travel together to celebrate Baba in Mombasa,” read a notice by ODM communications director Philip Etale. Supporters seeking to coordinate travel have been directed to contact the party for logistical arrangements, with ticket allocation on a first-come, first-served basis.
Acting party leader Oburu Odinga described the anniversary as a moment to honour the legacy of Raila Odinga, calling him “the father of modern democracy in Kenya,” whose vision, courage, and sacrifice built the movement. Oburu noted that the celebrations will be preceded by a special sitting of the National Governing Council on Thursday, November 13.
In Mombasa, all delegates—invited and self-sponsored—have been advised to present themselves at Mama Ngina Waterfront for registration and verification starting at 11 am. The three-day milestone event promises to be a memorable tribute to ODM’s journey, achievements, and the political legacy of Raila Odinga.
