The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has demanded that the government release Ksh 12.6 billion owed to the party under the Political Parties Act. According to ODM, the funds have not been disbursed for several years despite the party qualifying as one of the main beneficiaries.
In a statement released after a Central Committee meeting held on Monday and chaired by acting party leader Oburu Odinga, the party described the government’s delay as a violation of the law and a sign of bad faith. ODM said the withheld funds have hampered its national operations and must be released immediately in the spirit of fairness and accountability.
“The government has failed to release monies owed to ODM, a debt that now stands at Ksh 12.6 billion. We are demanding that the funds be released as required by law,” the statement read in part.
The party emphasized that releasing the funds would honour the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, who consistently advocated for transparency and equity in political financing.
Nationwide Memorial Events
Meanwhile, ODM has announced a series of nationwide memorial events in honour of the late Raila Odinga, giving Kenyans across the country an opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy.
According to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the celebrations will begin in Kilifi County on November 2 and 3, before proceeding to Homa Bay and Migori on November 5 and 6.
“The party will hold various memorial events across the country to enable ODM supporters and Kenyans at large to celebrate the life of a man who inspired millions,” Sifuna stated.
The planned memorials are expected to draw thousands of supporters and leaders from across the political divide, marking a moment of unity and remembrance for the longtime opposition leader who shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.
