Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have cautioned against the growing scramble to fill the political vacuum left by the late Raila Odinga, emphasizing that the Luo community remains united under his elder brother, Dr. Oburu Oginga.
During a meeting at Raila’s Opoda Farm in Bondo on Friday, top ODM delegates urged patience and restraint among younger politicians eyeing the “Luo kingpin” mantle. ODM chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said there is no need for a rushed succession process, noting that Dr. Oginga is well-positioned to offer political guidance and continuity.
“The leadership of Luo Nyanza has no vacuum because once Dr. Oburu has taken over the mantle of the party leadership, he is the same person who will guide the community going forward,” said Wanga, calling for unity and solidarity during the transition.
Ruaraka MP T.J. Kajwang’ issued a stern warning widely interpreted as directed at Embakasi East MP Babu Owino against youthful leaders positioning themselves for personal gain. “Our father Raila has left us in good hands… we shall continue to speak in one voice,” he said. Kajwang’ added that any premature succession talk risks fragmenting the community.
Migori County MP Fatuma Mohamed echoed the sentiment, urging respect for Dr. Oginga and warning that internal wrangles could weaken ODM’s legacy. “Raila kept us united. If we start unnecessary supremacy battles, the party may be polarized,” she remarked.
Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu emphasized that the world is watching how the Luo community handles this moment, urging unity to honor Raila’s legacy. Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ concluded that the community is not politically “orphaned,” asserting that Dr. Oginga remains a wise and capable leader to steer Luo Nyanza forward.
