The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of influencing Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s controversial remarks following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 22, ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga claimed that Kahiga was acting as Gachagua’s “mouthpiece,” linking his statements to past insensitive remarks made by the Deputy President.
“What I know is that Kahiga does not speak for himself. Kahiga is the spokesperson of Rigathi Gachagua,” Wanga stated. “Gachagua mocked Raila’s illness and asked whether he was a virus and whether Kalonzo was a bacterium. To date, Gachagua has not mourned Raila, who had earlier mourned his late brother, Nderitu Gachagua.”
Wanga’s remarks came after Kahiga appeared to celebrate Raila’s death, suggesting that his passing would redirect national development back to the Mount Kenya region. The comments drew widespread condemnation from leaders across the political divide and the public alike.
“The principle is that the friend of your enemy is your enemy,” Wanga declared, emphasizing that ODM would cut ties with Gachagua’s allies, including Kahiga.
Kahiga, who also served as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (COG), resigned from the position hours after the uproar, issuing a public apology to Raila’s family and supporters.
“I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning nation and the family of the Rt. Hon Raila Odinga. My remarks were in no way celebratory,” Kahiga said, clarifying that his comments were misinterpreted and not reflective of the Mount Kenya region or the COG.
Despite the apology, ODM leaders maintained that Kahiga’s remarks were unacceptable, calling for a show of respect and unity as the nation mourns one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
